Niederhofer, Lois Ann Weeks Hubbell, 91, got the death she hoped for as she died quietly in her sleep on February 27, 2017 in Anderson Township. After a life very well-lived, she had time to say multiple loving goodbyes to her devoted husband of 46 years, retired dentist Merle Niederhofer, as well as children William, Leesa, Tim, daughter-in-law Crystal and grandchildren Aaron, Alessa, Renee, Matthew, Joe, Ben, Grace, Stephen, son-in-law Ryan, great-granddaughter Gigi and to Pat Ogle, her caregiving angel. Lois was the munificent matriarch of her family. She loved red birds, mystery novels, crossword puzzles, the money wonks on CNBC, chocolate and her summer cottage with flower garden in Michigan. She hated barking dogs and noisy cars. She and Merle loved Paris, The Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, which they visited many times, fueled by the fruits of this stock market auto-didact’s investment strategies. Born in Cincinnati, Lois grew up near Coney Island in California, Ohio. She commuted (on foot, 2 streetcars and a bus, a story she loved to tell) to Walnut Hills High School then graduated from Christ Hospital School of Nursing. She became the youngest head nurse on record at Children’s Hospital and, later, a pediatric nurse in Dr. Jean Nitchal’s private practice. She met and married Aaron William (Bill) Hubbell in 1948. She and Merle were “set up” to meet by mutual friends after Lois’ first husband was killed in the 1969 Allegheny Airlines mid-air collision in Shelbyville, IN that helped induce the FAA to strengthen air traffic safety protocols. Merle’s affable, easy-going and fun-loving nature enhanced her second marriage – and her life - beyond measure. Lois was an infinitely loving but solitude-seeking insomniac who cracked jokes and complained about her husband’s coughing right up until she passed into the final sleep she longed for. A private Celebration of Life gathering will be held on 3/5/17 to honor her memory and legacy of love. Donations in memory of Lois’ dedication to women's health issues may be made to Planned Parenthood, or to Hospice of Cincinnati, whose staff took attentive care of her – and the family - throughout her final hours.
