Joe was born in Mansfield, OH on October 10, 1930, where he was recognized as a talented high school athlete. He never forgot his hometown and forever valued the memories made there and the people who so positively influenced his life. Upon graduation from Mansfield Sr. High School, he turned down an invitation by the NY Giants to play baseball, as well as other scholarships, in favor of becoming a University of Cincinnati Bearcat where he earned both bachelors and masters degrees. The UC football program and Coach Sid Gilman forever changed the course of his life by bringing direction and discipline to his talent. He loved his time at the University where he played baseball, serving as the catcher for Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax, and where he played both offense and defense on the football team that he captained in 1955. Joe still holds the record for the longest run from scrimmage for the Bearcats, but his most cherished memories were of the lifelong friends he made at UC where he also met his future wife, Gloria Lorenz. Joe served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Panama before graduating. Following graduation from UC, Joe was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played the preseason before returning to Cincinnati to marry his wife, Gloria, and begin his career. Joe's career was spent with the Forest Hills School District where he was the long time head football coach and athletic director at Anderson High School. He also had a long and memorable career at Kenwood Country Club where he served in various roles; the members and staff at Kenwood held a special place in his heart. After retiring from Forest Hills and Kenwood, Joe went on to mentor younger coaches in the city and was especially proud to be associated with the Indian Hill and Norwood football programs. In his lifetime, Joe was honored to be a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the University of Cincinnati Honorary, Sigma Sigma, an honor he shared with his son, Bil. Joe was also honored to be inducted into the Mansfield Sr. High School Hall of Fame, the Anderson Sr. High School Hall of Fame and the University of Cincinnati Hall of Fame. Joe was a respected educator who maintained lifelong friendships with his students, players and colleagues and will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of music, his incredible work ethic, and his charismatic leadership. He had endless pride in his family and set a great example of a Christian life for his family to follow. Joe made a difference in the lives of many in the city he loved and called home for almost 70 years, and he will be forever missed by his family and friends. "Well done good and faithful servant."
