Arlene Marion (Butler) Boyne, age 92, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, October 15, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Arlene was married for 38 years to the love of her life, the late Robert Daniel (“Bob”) Boyne, who was taken away far too soon in 1991. She is the cherished mother of Kevin Boyne (Barbara Boyne), Loretta Boyne (Gregory Helton), John Boyne (Cherie Boyne), Timothy Boyne (Barbara Boyne), Ellen Boyne (Jack Wibbels), and Arlene Boyne (Keith Yates), and proud and adoring “G-ma” to 18 loving grandchildren: Joey, Dano, Alex, Brittany, Pierce, Rachel (“Rachbob”), Christine, Rachel, Tyler, Nicholas, Holden, Anthony, Anna, Corbin, Evan, Emma, Chad, and Ellen, and their partners; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a loving aunt to Mary Roller, Denis Keily, and Laurie Vonderhaar, as well as their partners, children, and grandchildren. She is predeceased by Bob, her parents Pierce and Margaret (Hayes) Butler, sister Marjorie Ulrich, parents-in-law John and Vida (Corbin) Boyne, brother-in-law Walter Ulrich, brother-in-law John Boyne, sister-in-law Antoinette Boyne, and grandson Holden Yates.
Arlene was born on July 20, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Child Development at St. Joseph’s College, graduating in 1953. She taught third grade for a time before starting a family. Later in life she completed coursework in Design at the University of Cincinnati and launched a small interior decorating business.
On June 20, 1953, she married Bob Boyne. Their love story was a romance for the ages, characterized by mutual respect, deep understanding, and unending love. In their time together, Arlene and Bob lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey, and Maryland. After the devastating blow that was Bob’s untimely death, she moved from Annapolis, Maryland, to her lovely home overlooking the skyline of Cincinnati, carrying on with an independent spirit Bob would have admired. Arlene had an extraordinary ability to form connections with everyone she encountered, from the stranger next to her on a plane to the many informally adopted children and grandchildren she took into her life. Her smile came easily and often, and she had a special way of focusing on each person’s distinctive strengths and talents. She and Bob raised their children with a keen regard for preserving individuality, and as her family grew, Arlene enjoyed a unique and special relationship with each individual.
Arlene had a lovely singing voice. As a child she performed in public and sang on the radio, and her love of music and the arts colored her entire life. Arlene could usually be found spending time with family and friends, singing, telling stories, and enjoying (and exposing people to) theater, classic movies, ballet, live music performances, and travel to interesting and beautiful destinations around the world. She loved interior decoration, and her home was at all times full of treasures from her travels and the fresh flowers she loved. Arlene was a true lady in every sense. She greeted everyone with a hug and a smile, and put them at ease with her stories, kindness, and insight into living life to its fullest. She rarely met a person who didn’t become a friend. She was a champion of the goodness in everyone.
