Barbara Gilmore (Hewitt), age 91 of Cincinnati, Ohio (formerly Toledo, Ohio), died August 23, 2022.
She was the beloved wife of the late Paul Reynolds Gilmore, devoted mother of Thomas and Shannon (Kennedy) and loving grandmother of Claire, Parker and Bridget. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Max Addison Hewitt and Caroline (Nagel), as well as her older sister Nancy.
Born in Toledo on May 28, 1931, her family moved to Cleveland and then Scarsdale, New York in 1940. After the death of their mother in 1944, Barbara and Nancy attended boarding school in Dobbs Ferry, New York and then transferred to the Laurel Boarding School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Affectionally known as Bobbie by her classmates, she excelled in art and was known for her strong judgment and sense of humor.
After graduating from Laurel in 1949, Barbara moved to New York City with three of her cousins, where she enjoyed working at both Remington Rand and the New Yorker Magazine. She often spoke of her time at the New Yorker and the writers she met there. She had many stories from her time living in the city as a single woman in the 50s.
She and Paul met in New York and lived on Long Island. They were married in 1964 and moved to Toledo a few years later, where Tom was born. While in Toledo, Barbara was a devoted member of Christ Presbyterian Church for many years and later in life, Hope Lutheran Church. In addition to volunteering with her churches, she was a longtime supporter of Bethany House, worked as a volunteer at the Flower Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed many events at the Toledo Botanical Garden (formerly Crosby Gardens).
