Bruce Schingledecker

February 26, 1949 — July 23, 2023

Bruce E. Schingledecker, age 74 of Union Twp., died July 23, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Nancy J. Schingledecker (nee Noell), devoted father of Stacey (Luke) Wetterau and Lisa (Jonathan) Baltes, loving grandfather of Joshua (Blaire) Dalton, Megan Wetterau, and William & Margaret Baltes, caring great-grandfather of Thomas & Nicholas Dalton, and dear brother of Debra (Larry) Custer.

Bruce never met a stranger and could find friends almost anywhere - at the golf course, the grocery store, or even his favorite Skyline Chili location. He always had a kind word and a joke for those around him, and his smile could light up a room. He was often the first call people would make when they needed to move or paint a room or build a deck. Bruce's experience in home projects and helpful spirit made him an ideal project partner, and his work ethic made everyone else work even harder. He took great pride in his yard, working tirelessly with his wife Nancy to improve it. Until the very end, Bruce asked how he could help people - and he really meant it.

Bruce was also a great time. He loved a good prank in the neighborhood, throwing a surprise party, or hosting a backyard cookout. He was a grill master who loved to feed peoples stomachs with good food and their souls with wonderful conversation. One of his greatest gifts was getting people to open up about themselves and understanding how to make them feel comfortable and welcome. Over a Dr. Pepper, he could talk about anything.

Golf was his favorite pastime. While he loved to play the game, he really loved all of the things that came with it. He loved to teach others to play, and one of the best days of his life was when Nancy decided she would learn so that they could spend time together. He was a champion at searching out lost golf balls on the course, and he wore out many ball retrievers during his golf career. He made friends at his beloved Friendly Meadows Golf Course who became an important part of his world, and that community continued to welcome him in the last years of his life. He might have had an unorthodox swing, but it never stopped his passion.

Bruce's greatest joy came from his family. He was always up for a late night ice cream run, a shopping trip, or a family vacation. He was protective during times of illness and proud during joyful events. He was also calm and reliable in big emergencies; in anything from an illness to a car wreck, Bruce was his family's first call. He loved game nights, and he was usually the winner at games like Phase 10 and Clue - even though he was absolutely sure that he had never played before. He was a blast in euchre tournaments - but he always tried to get away with some lighthearted table talk. He was incredibly active and athletic, especially at family events. He baffled people in tennis matches because he could put a masterful spin on a forehand, and his football spiral was poetic. He loved to tell stories of family antics and could make a room full of people roar with laughter.

The world is dimmer without Bruce and his beautiful spirit. He spent his life putting other people first and focusing on how to be of service.
