Robert Dennis “Denny” Egbers, age 83 of Mt. Washington, passed on June 4, 2024. He was the steadfast husband of the late Mary Patricia “Pat” Egbers, devoted father of Emily (Marty) Coaker, dear brother of the late Mary Joyce Egbers, and brother-in-law of Judy (the late Tom) Winstel, Russ, Chris (Colleen), and the late Rick Markesbery. Also survived by supportive nieces and nephews - Tom (Carol) Winstel, Ann (Bill) Moran, Julie (Steve) Lazarus, Mary (Tim) Seaman, Jenny (Will) Brandt, Joe Markesbery, Shannon Markesbery, many sweet great-nieces and great-nephews, countless cousins on the Egbers’ side, and loyal friends.
The son of Robert William and Martha Metz Egbers, Denny was born in Cincinnati and grew up mainly in Mt. Lookout. He attended Cardinal Pacelli school, graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1959, and the University of Notre Dame in 1963. He spent his post-academic days first in the Army then enlisting in the OH Air National Guard in Wilmington, OH where he served until an honorable discharge in 1971. While his collegiate studies focused on finance and he initially started his career with P&G, his fascination with flight led him to take lessons at Lunken Airport. Denny earned his Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument, & Multi-Engine ratings. Combining his love of flying with his studies in finance, he became involved with various companies throughout his career as an aircraft salesman and broker. He traveled the country demonstrating and delivering many types of planes to potential buyers. From Piper Colts and Cessna Cardinals to Rockwell AeroCommanders and Piper Cheyennes, he flew a wide variety of planes without much formal training in any - a testament to his natural abilities. Later in his career, he worked for Ohio Aviation at Lunken Airport and Hartzell Propeller in Piqua, OH, where he traveled internationally. Even after his working days passed, he maintained an intense love for aviation - encouraging and following Emily along her path, attending airshows, spending time with Pat at the CVG viewing area, and even riding along in the flight deck with Marty. He got a real kick out of Emily marrying another pilot and enjoyed conversations with Marty about aviation - bonding over their good-natured personalities and common ground.
While aviation was Denny’s first passion, meeting Pat in the mid-70s introduced him to true love. Denny married Pat in 1976 and they began their life on the Ohio side of the river. After spending their first years in the Montgomery area and having Emily, they departed for a short stay in Winston-Salem, NC while Denny worked for Piedmont Airlines. They returned in the mid-80s for the remainder of their residence in Mt. Washington. Throughout 46+ years of marriage, Pat cared for Denny and Denny cared for Pat in ways he never imagined, but did so to the best he knew how. He truly was dedicated for better or for worse. They established and kept a lovely household, and raised Emily in the Catholic faith. A devout Catholic, Denny talked about being an altar boy during Latin Masses in grade school and found unwavering importance of catholic life and education; he embraced the faith and led by example.
Outside of the home, they truly enjoyed traveling in many forms and delighted in the adventure - from Denny flying them around, to vacations in Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, Maine, Wyoming, Michigan, and the Carolinas…the destinations and memories were plentiful. On work trips, his mind remained at home and he always brought back little treats for Patty & Emily - be it gummy bears from Germany or jewelry from Brazil, he spoiled his ladies. He treated them so well, even down to the fine gesture of corsages every Easter Sunday. He and Pat bought their first houseboat in the ‘70s and one again in the early 2000s. Spending time at the marina and entertaining on the Ohio was a true joy and he put meticulous care into the hobby. Denny enjoyed dinner parties with the regular group, going on trips with other couples, and appreciated recent times spent with local friends going out to lunches and dinners.
While memories of travel, flying, boating, and faith are the first that come to mind with Denny, those are about what he loved, and don’t complete the whole picture of who he was. He was a proud man who would never want a big fuss, but would appreciate the attention to detail and care. He loved his small family, valued good friendships, and found satisfaction in hard work and organization. Though he claimed to never be a cook, he enjoyed sharing a good meal and was grateful to those who made one for him and shared one with him. A rather private man, he kept much to himself and his immediate family, and enjoyed immense pride in the successes of those around him. Denny was a good man; steadfast in faith, family, and conviction. His way of expressing and showing his gratefulness, care, and love, was unique to him and understood by those who knew him best. A proper gentleman; he always tried to do what was right, and strived to be most appropriate in all of life’s happenings.
