Donald Allan Bishop, age 75, of Anderson Township, Cincinnati, Ohio passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
Don was born on April 2, 1948, to Eugene and Patricia (Shields) Bishop in Olean, New York. He graduated from Hinsdale Central School in 1966 and attended Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met his wife Mary. After deciding engineering was not his interest, he moved to Chicago and started working for AT&T Long Lines. Uncle Sam came knocking and he took a two year enlistment in the US Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam.
Shortly after his return from military service, Don married Mary M. Ueberfluss on October 10, 1970 in Cudahy, Wisconsin. They moved to Grayslake, Illinois and Don continued to work for AT&T in Chicago, transferring to Cincinnati in 1982. After 14 years of night school, Don finally completed his bachelors' degree from Xavier University and went on to earn a master's certificate in project management from George Washington University. He retired from AT&T after 30 years of service but continued his career in project management as an independent contractor for eight additional years.
When not working, Don coached his sons' youth baseball and basketball teams, oftentimes multiple teams at once. He loved to travel with Mary and together they explored over 30 different countries. He was also an avid baseball fan, eventually working his way up to annual trips for spring training and being a season ticket holder for the Reds.
Retirement provided the opportunity for community involvement. A member of the American Legion since 1973, he immersed himself in the growth, enhancement, and sustainability of American Legion Post 318. He held numerous officer positions within the Legion at both the local and District level, with several terms as Post Commander. He was instrumental in the move of the Legion to its current location, planning and volunteering for many of the fundraising events. He was also responsible for the creation of American Legion Post 318 Charities, Inc.
His personal dedication to veterans was not limited to the Legion. He served on the committee that brought the Anderson Township Veterans Memorial to fruition, visited numerous elementary school classrooms to talk about patriotism, and was a board member and Volunteer of the Year of the Coalition to Save Hillcrest Cemetery, a resting place for civil war veterans. In 2012 he was recognized as the Anderson (Township) Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.
Despite all of his public accolades, Don's greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Ueberfluss); children Christine Moore, Andrew (Candace) Bishop, and David (Kelly) Bishop; grandchildren Mikaela, Zachary and Nathan Moore; and brother Michael (Terry) Bishop.
