George Bagel

Bagel (Bryant), George W. of Mt. Washington, passed on April 19, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Irene J. Bagel (Meyer). George was a devoted father to George F. Bagel Jr, Kelly Teegarden (Stephen), Susan Weiderhold (Michael) and Christine Clark (Ryan). He is also survived by first cousins Shirley Steinberger (John), Phyliss Schaefer (late husband, Roy) and Barbara Willenbrink (George). George proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II. George's fascination with broadcasting began, when as a sailor in WWII, he saw live radio shows in Hollywood. He was instantly hooked! On discharge from the Navy he enrolled at the Schuster-Martin School of Radio and Drama in Walnut Hills; whose alumni included Ma Perkins, Tyrone Power, Hall Le Roy and many local personalities. Upon graduation in 1948, George wore many hats at WTIP, in Charleston, West Virginia. He went on to WCON in Atlanta, where he was voted "Favorite Disc Jockey" and worked with and taught control board operation to the then unknown Dick Van Dyke! George joined the announcing staff of WSB-TV in Atlanta, but was then lured back to WSAI in Cincinnati. He hosted "Partyline" with Peg Sherwood, was the announcer of "The Marsha Wheeler Program", "Joe Garretson's News", "Evening Concert" and was the network announcer on ABC for "Big Jon and Sparkie". Then it was on to WKRC TV for ten years as staff announcer and MC of Cinderella Weekend" with Shirley Jester and other programs. He taught Broadcasting courses at his Alma Mater, Schuster-Martin, at Our Lady of Cincinnati and at UC. The next stop was WGUC as announcer-producer, program director and then General Manager. He later became broadcast information officer at UC and on "retirement" worked as writer-producer, announcer at Norwood Cable. It was there that George won two Cincinnati Blue Chip Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting. George then heard of a new station getting ready to hit the air waves. This radio station was going to play "his" kind of format from the Golden Age of Radio. Classic radio comedies, dramas and the big bands were back. WMKV began broadcasting in 1995 and George was there. He DJ'ed the 4-5 p.m. Thursday afternoon drive time show. On Wednesday mornings you could hear the George Bryant Show "live" from 10-11 a.m. as he shared his "unhinged observations and unbalanced commentary!"
