Gwenda Patrice Buckman (nee Faulkner) fell asleep into the loving arms of the Lord on March 19, 2023, after a valiant battle with kidney cancer.
Her life story began November 14, 1953, at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She was the beloved daughter of Eloise and Douglas Faulkner of Stanton, Kentucky. In the words of her father, she came into the world big blue eyes wide open . . . probably the smartest and most beautiful kid in Texas, at least I thought so. Gwenda's childhood was marked with bouncing blonde curls, joys, and hardships. She was blessed by her stepfather Steve Delaney and loved summer-time trips to Kentucky to be with Mamaw & Papaw. She died a Kentucky Colonel, just like her daddy. Gwenda met Christ through her neighbors, Jimmy Dale and Ann Linville, who took her in during a time of need and whose children she babysat and grew to love as siblings (Laura, Ellen, Jad, and Molly). She and Jimmy Dale took Catholic instructions together at Precious Blood parish in Dayton, Ohio.
A 1972 graduate of Brookville High School, Gwenda studied for two years at Bowling Green State University. She then met the love her life, Kurt Buckman, at The She Nightclub in Dayton, Ohio. She thought he had good shoes and gave him her number. Good thing he remembered. Gwenda and Kurt married in 1974 and had almost 49 years together. They made their homes and raised their family in southwest Michigan and outside Rochester, New York, and retired to Cincinnati, Ohio. Gwenda fulfilled her ambition and finished her higher education. She earned both her Bachelors, and Masters from Western Michigan University and an advanced certificate in school administration from SUNY Brockport in New York. She served the public trust and helped countless kids as a speech therapist and special education administrator.
Gwenda loved to connect with the past through antiques and had great fun buying low and selling high in her side hustle with Kurt and her Dad and his wife Sandy. She found joy in beauty and interior design. She was deeply patriotic and often thanked veterans, especially Vietnam veterans.
Closest to her heart, though, was her family, especially her boys, Jad (Jamie) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Joel (Jessica), of Falls Church, Virginia. She saw the best in them and taught them well. They both married up, and Gwenda was blessed with two wonderful daughters-in-law and five grandchildren: Eva Emma, Noah John, Cole Bishop, Barrett Patrick, and Clara Grace. As she did with her sons, she sought to know each of them and exhorted them to be the best version of themselves, put positive energy into the world and would have reminded them that hard times would come, but often they are just little blips on the radar. As modeled by her father, she loved her family unconditionally. In addition to spending time with her grandchildren and family, she spent her final years reading, achieving certification in interior design, and serving on the Immaculate Heart of Mary school advisory council.
She died peacefully, face-to-face with her beloved Kurt after receiving final love and blessings from her boys, grandchildren, and many of those closest to her. She is deeply missed.
