Israel Bergwerk

August 13, 1926 — January 28, 2021

Israel Leonard Bergwerk, 94, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by his family. Lenny was born and raised in NYC. Upon graduation from DeWitt Clinton High School, he devoted 30 years to a career in the Merchant Marines and guided ships by the stars with a sextant. Afterwards he worked for Phoenix Steel until retirement. Lenny enjoyed spending time with family and especially loved reading Dr. Seuss books and playing cards with his granddaughter Chloe. He loved opera, dancing, telling jokes, and performing research in many areas. He was a life-long learner and a wonderful teacher to all who knew him. Lenny enjoyed fellowship at Beth Messiah Messianic Congregation and Christian Life Center. We honor him as a brilliant, intriguing, funny, loving, wonderful father, brother, grandfather, and friend. Lenny was predeceased by his ex-wife, Mary Bergwerk, and his siblings: Murray Bergwerk, Joseph Carl Bergwerk, and Blanche Bergwerk, along with his beloved longtime companion, Pauline Lutz. He is survived by his daughters: M. Lynn Bergwerk (Denny) of Tennessee, and his granddaughter Zoe; S. Tisha Bryan (Sam) of Washington, and his granddaughters Lauren and Hannah; Laurie Bergwerk-Gibson (Jim) of Ohio, and his granddaughters Claire and sweet Chloe. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Zalmanowitz (Sidney) of Israel and her children in Israel and California, and by his niece, Jennifer Bergwerk Murphy (John) of New York, and her two children, Kaitlyn and Ryan. Lenny brought much joy to many people and will remain a treasure in our hearts and memories as we carry on his legacy.
