J. Richard "Dick" Vliet

Joseph Richard (Dick) Vliet

Dick was born in Belvidere, New Jersey in 1932 to Harold and Anna (Ranzinger) Vliet.

Dick graduated from Highland Park High School in 1950. He then joined his brother in TV repair before entering military service in the Army where he earned the rank of Corporal and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He served in the 5th Infantry Division in the Signal Corps.

Dick met the love of his life, Ida, in 1951 working at Triangle Cable in New Brunswick NJ. While stationed in Germany, they corresponded and upon his return they reunited and were marred in November 1954 in New Brunswick. Dick and Ida started their family in Edison, NJ and their children meant the world to them.

Dick began working at Mobil Chemical in Edison in 1959 and retired in 1990 after 31 years of service as a safety engineer. While working at Mobil, he made many lifelong friends

Everyone who knew Dick knew how much he loved sailing at Swartswood Lake, traveling with friends and especially playing golf. He also loved all things aviation and would take his children on small private plane rides. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ida (Gyenes), his parents Harold B. and Anna Vliet and brother Harold (Ray) Vliet, and is survived by daughter Eileen (Bob) Kjeldsen, and sons Rick (Kim) Vliet, and Fred (Naomi) Vliet and grandchildren Erik Kjeldsen, Kelly Cross, and Mark Kjeldsen and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday December 1, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Mt. Washington Baptist Church, 2021 Sutton Avenue Cincinnati OH 45230 with services following at 4:00. A memorial and interment at Lake Nelson Memorial Park in Piscataway, NJ will be planned for a later date
