John (40) was a Hollywood-based, independent film-maker, Fire Trial Films production company owner, and script writer, and had recently completed extensive work on and production of the fantasy film, Moon Garden, with his USC film school mate, friend, and business partner, Ryan Stevens Harris. Moon Garden recently swept the Indie film awards nationally and internationally and John and Ryan traveled widely to receive the many awards and enjoy the screenings.
John grew up in Cincinnati, attended Guardian Angels School; Anchorage (Alaska) Junior High; Anderson Junior High; and both St. Xavier and McNicholas high schools. In his junior year summer he went on a mission trip to the Mexican border. He graduated with honors in 2001 from St. Xavier High. He was a Magna Cum Laud graduate of the University of Southern California , where he majored in film production and made life-long friends. He graduated in December, 2004, and spent his last college semester making his first feature, Finale, in Cincinnati, a low-budget film that went all over the world.
John and his brothers, Doug and Paul, had many adventures. He made funny home movies with them as a child and enjoyed time with them in nature, inventing stories and trekking in the woods. He had great memories of his father, Terry, teaching him to solder robot models in Alaska and making a hover board, as well as going hiking with him along the Ohio River. He was a wonderful student, including his sophomore year in his mother’s Spanish class at St. Xavier.
The Elfers family is grateful to our extended family and friends for your prayers and kind gestures. May John’s beautiful soul be entering God’s perfect peace and love and his caring spirit remain alive in the world, awaiting the Resurrection and eternal joy in heaven.
