Dick Burdick 1941 – 2023
A God-fearing man who cherished his family and friendships and who was a successful business owner, pet lover and sports enthusiast.
John Richard “Dick” Burdick, 82, of Cincinnati, OH, passed away peacefully at home on 11/12/23.
He was born in Columbus, OH on 8/13/1941 and is preceded in death by his Father Edmund Burdick and Mother Margaret (Johnston) and Brother Phil Burdick.
Dick initially lived all around Ohio before his family settled in Mount Washington (Cincinnati) where he attended Mt. Washington School and then Withrow High School where he starred in Football, Basketball and Track & Field and was eventually named Withrow Athlete of The Year in 1960. Withrow is also where Dick met his life-long high school sweetheart and wife Gayle (Goesling). Dick then attended Miami (OH) University where he played basketball and then later transferred to the University of Cincinnati where he became a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After college Dick worked for his father at his finance company doing collections. He then worked for 12 years for the State of Ohio within their Department of Commerce before getting into logistics with Interstate Motor. In 1993 Dick started Burd Brothers, Inc. with his sons. Over the last 30 years Burd Brothers has grown to become known as one of the top leading trucking and warehouse companies throughout the tri-state region in large part due to Dick’s vision and leadership. When away from work Dick loved watching his children and grandchildren’s games, recitals, and school events. He could also be found at Stillmeadow Country Club enjoying a round of golf or tennis match with his buddies. Dick also loved his faith and sharing it as he was a devote Catholic and mentored many that were in prison ministry for over 10 years.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Gayle, who he celebrated 60 years of marriage with earlier this year. He is survived by his 3 children and 10 grandchildren: Son, Shaun Burdick and Grandchildren, Alexis, Cole, and Mackenzie. Son and Daughter-in-law, Ty and Lori (Arnold) Burdick and Grandchildren, Tyler, Peyton, Kaylin, and Karley. Daughter and Son-in-law, Kelly (Burdick) and Kyle Judy and Grandchildren, Cora, Clark, and Cade.
Dick will always be remembered for his resilience, determination, and loyalty in the way he went about his life, relationships, and love of his family. We’ll always imagine hearing him say “How high is the water, Mama?” or “O-H!” or “True.” or “Come on Dick, uh!” one more time. We couldn’t have asked for a better Papa and will miss Dick every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Saturday 11/18 at 930am followed by mass at 1030am at Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) a reception will immediately follow at Heritage Hall (IHM).
