Joseph A. Meyer, age 81 of Anderson Twp., died September 11, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Carolyn C. Meyer (nee Matikiewicz), devoted father of John (Melissa) Meyer, Dawn (Michael) Slemons, Kathy Meyer, and Michael Meyer, loving grandfather of Nathan and Emily Meyer, Jordan and Grayson Slemons, and Jackson Meyer, dear brother of Sister Elizabeth Meyer and the late William Meyer Jr., and brother-in-law of Carolyn Meyer.
Joseph Meyer grew up in Speedway, Indiana where he was a free spirited, fun loving child always full of life where he spent his free time with all the children of the neighborhood. He often told his own children the stories of riding bikes with his cousins and friends the Reidys and the Zinks and spending vacations in Michigan playing in the lake. He went to Cathedral High School followed by entering the religious life. He then attended Notre Dame where he developed an even greater passion for the Fighting Irish. He was an avid fan and has instilled that passion in his children. Notre Dame, our Mother -- Pray for Us.
Joseph met the love of his life "Mickey" in Hagerstown Maryland on a blind date bowling. They soon fell in love and were married October 3rd 1964. Within the first 4 years of marriage they moved 8 times and had 3 children. They finally settled here in Anderson Township where they had their 4th child.
He was a devote Catholic and volunteered as a greeter for the 11:30 mass for many years at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was involved in the parish in several groups including Stephan's Ministries and often attended Adoration on Wednesday mornings. He was a member of the parish for 45 years attending mass weekly.
Joseph loved music and his favorite was jazz, but he listened to almost anything with a solid beat and resounding voice. He also loved watching sports - baseball, football, tennis, golf, boxing, basketball - if it was an event he was sure to be watching it. His favorite times though were at the beach in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his family and relatives. He loved fishing, going to the lighthouses, walking on the beach, and playing cards. His laugh was contagious and all of his beach trips were full of great memories.
Joseph had an infectious love of life that he shared with all that crossed his path. He was true through and through and held strong to all his beliefs and values in life. He will be missed by his family and friends, but is now with his brother Bill and wife Mickey in heaven.
