Kay Atkins

Atkins, Kay (nee Dorsey) beloved mother of Beth (Rick) Atkins Vieira and Chad (Debra) Atkins, devoted sister of Diann and the late Roger Dorsey, loving grandmother of Andrew and Michael Vieira, and Charlotte and Nora Atkins, aunt of Roger Dowd Dorsey, Melissa Meagher, and Lori Slater. Kay was a graduate of Batavia High School, Christ Hospital School of Nursing and earned a Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati. During her nursing career Kay served as Nursing Director at Christ Hospital. Her community involvement included work as a Stephen Minister at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, a docent at the Taft Museum, and a longtime Girl Scout troop leader. Kay also made an absolutely terrific chocolate cake, based on the following recipe: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3 round nine inch pans, line the bottoms with wax or parchment paper, and grease paper. At medium speed, beat 1 cup butter until smooth. Gradually add 2 cups sugar, beating until fluffy. Beat in 2 eggs one at a time, then 1 teaspoon vanilla. Sift 3 cups cake flour with half cup cocoa, 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt. At low speed, beat flour mixture into butter mixture, alternating with 2 cups buttermilk. Start and end with flour. Pour evenly into pans. Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Ice with your favorite chocolate icing. A Memorial Service to celebrate Kay's life will be held at the Chapel at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, Grace and Observatory Aves. on Sat.
