Martha L. Poland

Martha L. Poland (nee Schartz), 87, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021. She was born October 5, 1933, in Springfield, Ohio to John and Miriam (LaVelle) Schartz. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, of 58 years, brother, John, and sister, Barbara (Schartz) Tootle. Upon graduating from Catholic Central High School, Martha attended Mount St. Joseph College earning her Bachelor of Science degree to become a Registered Nurse. Martha began her nursing career working as an ER nurse. Her career was put on hold as she stayed at home to raise her three children. Martha returned to the nursing field and worked at Salem Park Nursing Home before retiring. For over 50 years Martha attended and was fully involved with Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, specifically crocheting prayer shawls and donating them to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Martha had many hobbies and was very talented. She was an exceptional organ and piano player. Arts and crafts were her joy, including, knitting, crocheting, card making, sewing, and creating flower arrangements and wreaths. Every room in her home was decorated with items she had made. Family and friends cherish the items Martha crocheted such as baby blankets for newborns, blankets as wedding and graduation gifts, and even clothing items. Martha was happiest when she was doing something for others. Above all, Martha will be remembered for her kind, gentle, thoughtful spirit, and dedication to her faith and family. Every decision Martha made was with her family in mind. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Martha Ann, sons, Mike and Rick, brother, Charlie (Judy) Schartz, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 7820 Beechmont Ave, Anderson Twp. The mass will be live streamed via www.IHOM.org. Internment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org, or a charity of your choice.
