Mary Alice "Pitt" Lumpkin

June 25, 1942 — November 3, 2022

Mary Alice "Pitt" Lumpkin (nee Stults), age 80, a longtime resident of Cincinnati, OH, died peacefully with her daughters by her side, on November 3, 2022. She was born on June 25, 1942 in Coshocton, OH and grew up in Indiana with her late sister Coralyn, and her late parents Medford and Frances Stults. She was the beloved wife of the late Steve Lumpkin, devoted mother of Brett (Amanda) Long, Christa (Chad) Martin, and Jenny (Dan) Adams, loving grandmother of Lillianna, Thomas, Trevor, Taylor, Madison, Raegan, Grant, and Lilian, doting great-grandmother of Claire. Her three children already miss her caring and thoughtful wisdom. A private celebration of life service will be held on Sunday November 20th, at 7:00 pm.

It was at her 40th year high school reunion that Pitt and Steve Lumpkin began a relationship that endured until Steve’s passing on May 19th 2019. Building a log cabin, traveling the world, and various other adventures defined their marriage and seemed bigger and better than what their 19 years together could be.

Learning, teaching, sharing, and travel were important to Pitt, but her legacy and love of family was always central to everything she did. As a mostly single mother she raised her children with the proper balance of carrot and stick. Each of her grandchildren were in disbelief when they learned that her children called her “The Bulldog” for her no-nonsense approach to discipline.

Learning, Teaching and Sharing

Pitt began working at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, after receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Clinical Microbiology and Medical Technology from Ball State University. She retired 40 years later from St. Elizabeth Hospitals in Edgewood and Covington KY. Gaining many lifelong friends along the way.

Always curious, always adapting and changing, Pitt was most interested in the lives of her constantly growing family. Whether it was school, sports, or personal lives she was truly interested and always positive.

Travel

Growing up in rural Indiana, Pitt and family spent the 1970s and 80s packing and unpacking as they moved across the country. The homes included: Indianapolis, IN; Wheaton, IL; Dallas, TX; Lubbock, TX; Cincinnati, OH; and Carmel, IN. Add in family vacations and you can see where Pitt gained her appreciation for travel and adventure.

She experienced everything from an African safari to dogsledding on the Minnesota/Canada border, and virtually everything in between. Pitt and Steve traveled to Eastern Europe, and the UK. They did an Alaskan cruise, and Glacier National Park. They traveled to the coast of Maine and spent their honeymoon in Key West. An extensive trip up the coast of Maine brought her to meet the Puffin, which immediately became her favorite animal.

Pitt also kept strong and long-lasting friendships from childhood through college, with co-workers, and neighbors along the way. The “Dinkettes” were a group of treasured childhood friends that Pitt traveled extensively with, even as recently as September of this year.

It was a great comfort to her that so many of these friends visited and called during the last days and weeks as her condition worsened.

Family

Family always came first for Pitt. In celebration of her 80th birthday this past July, Pitt was able to enjoy her entire family for a long weekend in one massive home. Playing games, talking, sharing, there could not have been a better birthday present. With children and grandchildren spread all across the country, the timing and logistics were a challenge, and it was so much appreciated by all.

Pitt meant so much to so many for her intellect, quick wit, honesty, love, and compassion and that will last forever. She is already missed but will never be forgotten.
