Mary's focus in life was to be a mother and homemaker. She gave birth to five healthy children while living in five different residences across four states. At age thirty-four, and with five children ages one through eleven, Mary returned to the city where she was born. At age 44 she gave birth to a final healthy child.
Always foremost in her mind was the welfare and safety of her children: nutritious hot meals, warm clothing, health, vitamins, and vaccinations; their safety walking to and from school, while playing outside or riding bicycles or driving cars or staying out late. Christmas was her favorite time of year and she greatly enjoyed decorating her house for the holidays. Also special were her children's birthdays. She always baked a cake, complete with the appropriate number of candles, and made the favorite meal for whoever was being celebrated. On St. Patrick's Day she would often place little green leprechauns where they would be seen by the children. Mary was a devoted Roman catholic who treasured attending Mass every Sunday and Holyday, especially when accompanied by her children.
Sometime during the 1970's the Chief Executive Officer of United Technologies published in The Wall Street Journal a tribute to the homemaker with copies suitable for framing available to anyone who requested. Mary requested one, framed it, and hung it on the dinette wall. The tribute described the homemaker as: "The most creative job in the world; it involves taste, fashion, decorating, recreation, education, transportation, psychology, romance, cuisine, designing, literature, medicine, handicraft, art, horticulture, economics, government, community relations, pediatrics, geriatrics, entertainment, maintenance, purchasing, direct mail, law, accounting, religion, energy, and management. Anyone who can handle all those has to be somebody special. She is. She's a homemaker." That was her life well lived.
