Melanie Fish (née Hartenian) died peacefully in her sleep at Traditions of Camargo in Madeira, Ohio
the morning of November 17, 2023. She was 79.
Melanie is preceded in death by her mother Shirley (Seybold) Hartenian (1924-1970), her father
Edward Hartenian (1922-2021), her uncles Roland and Harvey Seybold, Jr., her aunts Elaine Booze,
Margaret Froehlic, and Carolyn Gaker, and her cousins Louis Seybold, Brett Froehlich, Jeff Gaker, and
David Gaker.
She is survived by her children Laura (Walter) Rupp, Thomas (Felice) Jenike, and Lesley (Joshua Butts)
Jenike, and her seven grandchildren Jacob Jenike, Sophie Jenike, Jessica Rupp, Hayley Rupp, Caroline
Rupp, Willa Mae Jenike-Butts, and Jasper Jenike-Butts. Shes also survived by many friends, students,
and colleagues who loved her deeply.
Melanie Fish was born in Temple, Texas in 1943 but grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio in Hyde Park with
her immediate family and among her sprawling extended family at the Seybold home in Amberley
Village. She was active in her Withrow high school and University of Cincinnati sororities and was a
member of the Bearcats cheer team while enrolled in UCs teachers college. She taught 4th grade at St.
Marys School in Hyde Park and then for many years at St. Bernadette School in Amelia while raising
her young family. Melanie later worked as a flight attendant, a real estate agent, a travel agent, an
aerobics instructor, and as an administrative assistant at the School of Creative and Performing Arts.
Later in life, Melanie returned to teaching and served as a valued member of Taft Elementarys
community where she made a demonstrative impact on so many lives with the extraordinary love and
compassion she had for her students and fellow teachers.
Melanie was also an enthusiastic gardener, an avid runner, and a life-long lover of animals. Her many
pets gave her great joy and comfort and in service of her deep love for animals, donations can be made
