Rose Gigliotti

September 29, 1932 — August 20, 2023

Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Angela Rose Marie Antoinette Virginia Carella Gigliotti passed away on August 20, 2023. She was 90. She was born in 1932, the second of three children and only daughter to Vito Leonardo and Carmela Carella in Brooklyn, NY. In 1953, Rose Marie earned a history degree from Caldwell College, going on to teach at St. Bernadette’s in Brooklyn, and in 1955 married Gilbert M. Gigliotti, whom she had met the previous summer when he started working at her family-run resort in the Catskills, the Laurel House. Rose Marie and Gilbert had four children together: Michael (who pre-deceased her in 2021), Frances, Gilbert, and Anthony. Before moving to Cincinnati in 1964, the couple lived in Harrisburg, Levittown, and Allentown, PA.

A 50s/60s homemaker par excellence, Rose Marie was known for her entertaining and, especially, her cooking. Always one happy to share, her lasagna and tomato sauce recipes were featured in the Cincinnati Post and Times-Star in January 1968. For decades, she was a member of Cincinnati’s “Gourmet Group,” a monthly gathering of women from across the city who collectively prepared and enjoyed wonderful meals – literally “from soup to nuts.”

When her youngest entered school, Rose Marie began a catering business with several other women: she handled the food preparation, the others the on-site duties. She subsequently was hired to run the cafeteria of her parish school, Guardian Angels (GA) in Mt. Washington, and under her management helped upgrade the parish/school kitchen and social hall. Her success led her to serve as the go-to chef for GA’s pastors whenever the archbishop or other special guests came to visit.

While she never stopped cooking for family and friends, Rose Marie’s focus shifted dramatically when her husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She became his primary caregiver for more than 30 years, until his death in 2004. Her experience led Rose Marie to start and manage a caregivers group at GA, recruiting and organizing volunteers to assist those who needed care and to alleviate the constant burden on their caregivers. The growth and impact of the group was recognized officially in 2003, when the Association for Professionals in Aging (APA) named Rose Marie the “Outstanding Individual Providing Service in the Field of Aging.”

A devout Roman Catholic, Rose Marie was active in GA’s parish life as a Eucharistic Minister, a participant in “Christ Renews His Parish,” a student in Scripture classes, a member of the PTA, and, in 1974, a member of the editorial board of GA’s Angel’s Food Cookbook. She also volunteered for many years at Birthright and the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Her travels, begun later in life, included trips to Italy, China, France, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.

A stroke in 2017 effectively ended Rose Marie’s busy schedule, and she spent her final years at Angel’s Care Family Home in Newtown, OH.

Rose Marie is survived by her younger brother, Joseph Carella (Winston Salem, NC); her children, Donna Marko Gigliotti (Mayfield Heights, OH); Frances and Timothy Turner (Indianapolis, IN); Gilbert Gigliotti and Martha Perry (New Britain, CT); Anthony and Maria Gigliotti (Fort Mitchell, KY); her grandchildren Carolyn Gigliotti, Stephanie and Michael Provenzano, Joseph and Lauren Gigliotti, Lauren and Dustin Randant, Nicole and Ryan Cash, Cecilia and Celeste Gigliotti, and Claire and Sarah Gigliotti; her great-grandchildren Eleanor, Abigail, Isabella, Vail, Nicholas, and Carter; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, 8/26/23, with viewing 9:30-10:30 AM at Guardian Angels Church in Mt. Washington at 6531 Beechmont Ave, Cincinnati, OH, 45230.
