Sr. Mary Urban Aranyos, CSJ, (Ethel Marie), age 93, died peacefully at Mount St. Joseph, Wheeling, WV, on Friday, May 12, 2023. Sr. Urban was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of the seven children of Joseph and Helen (Spisak) Aranyos. Sr. Urban is survived by the sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph; sisters, Mildred Blom and Margaret Carpenter; and brother, Robert Aranyos. She is predeceased by her parents; brothers, Richard and Andrew Aranyos; and sister, Ella Hubbard. She entered the Congregation of St. Joseph in 1947.
Sr. Urban was an educator most of her life. She taught in elementary schools on the east side of Cincinnati including St. Thomas More, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Guardian Angels; and at McNichols High School and local colleges - Chatfield and Southern State Community College. She was also Religious Ed Coordinator for three rural parishes in Arnheim, Georgetown and Sardinia. When Sr. Urban retired, she continued social action ministry in rural parishes as she visited the sick and homebound, bringing communion. She collected many needed items for the poor and homeless including migrants working at River Downs Race Track.
Sr. Urban considered it to be a great privilege to be a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph and to be of service to so many in the rural areas. She had a great devotion to the Eucharist and to St. Joseph.
Following services in Wheeling, WV, Sr. Urban will be transported to Cincinnati. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 27, 2023 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 800 Ohio Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45245 at 10:30am. Friends may visit the Church on Saturday from 9am-10:30am. Interment at Guardian Angels Cemetery.
