Thomas "Tom" Mcternan

October 16, 1943 — March 16, 2024

Thomas F. (Tom) McTernan, a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather passed away on March 16, 2024, at the age of 80.

Tom was born on October 16, 1943 in White Plains, New York, the son of the late Thomas and Yolanda (Cella). He was the younger brother of John (Laurel). From a young age, Tom's mischievousness and humor touched the lives of many.

In 1964, Tom married Carol Gerwe, his high school sweetheart, and they were blessed with five children: Kelly (Rick Schulte) Broscheid, Jenny (Ken) Burns, Tracy (Ray) Jennings, Kate (Martin) Miller & the late Thomas McTernan Jr. After 59 years of marriage, Carol passed away in 2019.

Tom spent most of his working life in sales of industrial filtration systems. When he retired, he surprised all by taking a position as a paraprofessional for students with multiple disabilities at Clark High School. His impact on those children is still felt today.

Tom cherished his role as grandfather, and great-grandfather, and was adored by all nine grandchildren Caroline, Raymond, Matthew, Delaney, Sophia, Sydney, Melanie, Samuel, Michael, and his great grandson Rory. He counted his sister and brother-in-laws John, Kim, Dan and Katie as true family. Tom had too-many-to-count nieces and nephews that he loved spending time with during holidays and weekends by the pool. He loved his trip to Australia to see his brother and sister-in-law and niece Kate. They had many adventures that are still talked about today.

Tom loved swimming competitively and was well known throughout the city as a swim coach for several teams. He also spent many years as a swim coach for the Special Olympics in Hamilton County. When not in the pool, Tom enjoyed watching his Alma Mater, Villanova play basketball.

Mass of Christian Burial at St Veronica Church, Mt. Carmel on Mon. March 25, at 10 AM. Friends may visit T. P. WHITE & SONS Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Avenue, Mt. Washington, on Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 3:00-5:00 PM.
